Две знатные фамилии Вероны,
Не утолив старинную вражду,
Мятежно попирая все законы,
Творят кровопролитье и беду.

Друг друга любят тех фамилий дети,
Но лишь их смерть рукою ледяной
Кладёт конец неистовой вендетте
И гасит распрю дорогой ценой.

Войну, что разделила два семейства,
Их гнев и примиренье в скорбный час –
На краткий срок предметом лицедейства
Мы сделать постараемся для вас.

Огрехи в пьесе есть – смешны и мелки.
Играя, мы поправим недоделки.

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;

The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which but their children's end naught could remove,
Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage,
